May 8th 1945 - to be known
as 'VE Day' - was proclaimed
a holiday. Faded flags and
bunting saved from the 1937
Coronation appeared
bravely on the shabby, run-
down buildings. 'Well, it's all
over,' she muses, 'but at
what a cost. So many young
lives lost, families
devastated, homes
destroyed . . . '
Had all that terrible sacrifice
been worth it? 'At seventeen,
I honestly couldn't tell.'
